L2 Dragon

CREATURE DESIGN - DRAGONS (9/21/2019)
The goal of this assignment is to introduce and equip you with the basic concepts of designing a dragon. Dragons are one of the most iconic of all fantasy creatures and can be interpreted into many different ideas.

We will focus on identifying a body type that you would like to work with, adding personality to the head, scale patterns, and briefly surveying different animal body parts for inspiration and reference.

When completed we should have one finished render of a detailed design.
This design can be done in a line driven style, and clean pencil work is fine, or a painterly style. Ink work is perfectly acceptable, but before moving to ink first make sure all pencil work is completed and you are not overextended.

Week 1 of the Dragon assignment deliverables are:
-1 8.5x11 @300dpi page that includes black silhouettes of different body types, with the idea that you are only doing as many as you need to decide on one to continue with. These are Black full-body silhouettes against a white background.

- 1 page of 8.5x11 @ 300 DPi of just head sketches and then pick one to resolve at a higher level of detail to preview the style of how you want to do the final render.

In the class next week, Sept 21st, 2019 I will do a demo on scale patterns and getting started on the detailed render.

Week 2 of the Dragon assignment deliverables are:
1 full render of the dragon in a side view or 3/4 view.
It will need to fit on a sheet that is 13x19 at 300 dpi.

It can be vertically or horizontally aligned.

While you are resolving your ideas you can work on it at a lower resolution, or even draw it on paper if you prefer.
All final work, however, will be turned in digitally (even if its cleaned up analog work.
You are allowed to take photos with your phone of your art (if it's well lit and not distorted), and clean it up in photoshop.

The final render will need to have basic color added.

Due to time limitations, a highly detailed grayscale render is also acceptable.

If you need references or ideas here is a Pinterest board I put together with different kinds of Dragons.
